Wellness technology in the smart home — comfort scene with automated lighting and climate

Your Shower Now Talks to Control4: Wellness Tech Comes Home

Buried in CE Pro's trends wrap from CEDIA Expo 2026, published 10 September, was one line we've been waiting for someone to write: Kohler's Anthem+ smart shower now connects directly to Control4 (and Crestron). It sounds like a novelty. It isn't — it's the clearest sign yet of where professionally installed automation is heading next.

What the integration actually does

Anthem+ is Kohler's digital showering system — precise temperature, multiple outlets, presets per person. Connected to Control4, the shower becomes another device the system can orchestrate. The practical version: a morning scene that starts the shower warming as the bedroom blinds open, or an evening wind-down that runs the shower, dims the bathroom lighting to something civilised, and puts something quiet on the ceiling speaker. Set your temperature once and it's yours, every time, on any bathroom in the house.

Is any of that essential? No. Neither were motorised blinds, until people lived with them. The point is that the bathroom — the last unautomated room in most homes — now has a serious, direct integration path into the platform we install every week.

Wellness is the trend behind the trend

The same CEDIA coverage named wellness integration as one of the currents redefining the industry, and it's broader than showers. The pieces have been arriving separately for a couple of years:

  • Circadian lighting — colour temperature that tracks the day, warm in the evening, energising in the morning. Our lighting control guide covers how this is done properly rather than with a colour-changing globe.
  • Automated shading — waking with daylight rather than an alarm. The quiet hero of every project we finish; see why shading is 2026's design trend.
  • Air and climate — ventilation and temperature that manage themselves around occupancy and time of day. Covered in our climate control guide.
  • Now, water — the Kohler move brings the shower, and by extension the whole bathroom routine, into the same system.

Individually, each is a nice-to-have. Orchestrated by one platform, they add up to a home that actively supports how you sleep, wake and unwind. That's what "wellness tech" means once you strip the marketing off it.

The caveats, because there are always caveats

Australian availability and pricing for Anthem+ with the Control4 driver is the detail to confirm before anyone gets excited — US announcements have a habit of arriving here late and dearer. And digital showering systems are a renovation-stage decision, not a retrofit whim: they need the valve hardware plumbed in. If your bathroom renovation is on the horizon, that's exactly the right time to raise it — which is the same advice we give about cabling in our new build guide: the cheapest time to add capability is before the walls close.

The bigger picture

Ten years ago the pitch for home automation was security and a big TV. Five years ago it was lighting and music. The 2026 version is quieter: a house that handles the daily routine — light, warmth, sound, and now water — without being asked twice. The bathroom joining the system isn't a gimmick. It's the platform finishing the job.
